"What a fantastic show! Funny, energetic and full of confidence from the whole cast. Huge congratulations to the students, and enormous thanks to the teachers and staff whose dedication (and many hours beyond the school day) make something like this possible. We are very lucky to have you all."  Mrs Southworth

We are still buzzing from the incredible energy of our most recent school musical: The School of Rock. Did you see it? The high-octane atmosphere… the rockandroll spirit… the dazzling blend of bright lights, skilled musicians playing live on stage and in the pit, slick sets, and showstopping vocals. All of it powered by an incredible cast and crew and at the front of it all: our very own rock legend, Henry H.

Over two unforgettable nights at The Theatre Royal in Winchester, our 59 performing students, 7 strong backstage team, and 11 musicians absolutely blew us away. The theatre was packed, the excitement electric, and the impact profound.
The annual musical brings our pupils together—the shared experience forges friendships across year groups and gives pupils the courage to challenge themselves and try something new.  Being involved in musical theatre is far more than an extracurricular pastime; it offers a rich array of experiences that enables children to grow in confidence and creativity, allowing them to explore their individuality, express themselves, and build life-long skills.

And how do you describe that feeling? That overwhelming surge of pride whilst watching the show when everything gloriously comes together? When you see the students shine, playing instruments live on stage and in the band pit, when the chorus unite in one unanimous, harmonious, uplifting, and powerful sound? That becomes a core memory for everyone involved.

But how do we get there… to that magical moment?

By pulling together as a community. A big one.

The cast, crew, drama and music departments

They start it all. And it’s not easy. Rehearsals every Thursday lunchtime and Wednesday after school from September to March. That means months of teachers persuading, directing and imploring children to learn lines, and months of endless practice for pupils as they memorise their parts, master songs and try choreography again and again. And on top of that there’s individual vocal coaching by Mrs G-C and additional practices for those involved in the two live bands who had to commit above and beyond to achieve a smooth, synchronised performance on show-nights.

Families
Costumes, fees, transport, late nights, early mornings, ticket buying, raffle prizes, snacks, forgotten lines, emotional support before finally cheering from the audience. When a child is in the school musical, the whole family is in the school musical.

The Art Department
From the first script read-through, they’re imagining the world of the show. Designing, building, painting, printing, stitching, altering, photographing, and programme‑creating. Ordering more paint, waiting for the second coat to dry… and then doing it all again.

Cleaners, Facilities, Drivers and Catering

  • The cleaners: extra glitter, threads and pins to pick up; rails and props to negotiate.
  • Facilities: lifting, shifting, transporting the entire set, instruments and costumes from The Gregg to the theatre.
  • Drivers – putting in extra shifts to transport the students to and from the theatre.
  • Chefs in school at dawn to prepare 70+ packed lunches and snacks for each theatre day.

Teachers
Supporting back stage or in school covering lessons/adjusting lessons to accommodate the number of pupils missing from class.

Friends
Buying tickets, filling the theatre, cheering, celebrating, supporting—and helping everyone bounce back after the adrenaline wears off.

And at the heart of it all… The annual school musical is the creation of two long‑time friends and exceptional teachers:
Mrs Azor (Drama) and Miss Parrott (Music).

Their passion is the spark. Their months of dedication, late nights, nagging, patience, tears, laughter, musical direction and creative vision are what transforms a typed script into a sensational theatrical experience. They draw us all in because they know that as a supportive community we can bring out the best in our students. Show them what they are capable of. And remind us that school should be:

Teamwork. Community. Creativity. Confidence. And unforgettable memories that last a lifetime.

Thank you to everyone who made The School of Rock possible. We couldn’t have done it without each and every one of you!
